18 January 2026A Coin validator is an electromechanical component in the vending machine that checks inserted coins for authenticity, determines their value and, if necessary, pays out change in various denominations.
Function and area of use
Coin validators use optical and inductive sensors to scan the material, diameter, thickness and magnetic profile of a coin. Counterfeit money or foreign currencies are detected immediately and ejected via the return chute. High-quality models have a “coin changer” with several tubes for storing and returning change.
Although Cashless payment is increasing, the coin validator remains indispensable at many locations, especially where children (schools) or older people shop. It ensures that every customer can buy at the vending machine, regardless of their digital equipment.
Modern coin validators are extremely resistant to tampering and “fishing” attempts. They can easily be configured to accept tokens or special tokens for company canteens. Via the MDB interface they communicate directly with the vending machine’s main board.

Frequently asked questions
How often does a coin validator need cleaning?
Depending on the location and how dirty the coins are, cleaning the coin path every 3–6 months is recommended to avoid acceptance errors.
What happens when the change tubes are empty?
The vending machine reports this on the display (“exact change only”) or via telemetry to the operator so that they can top up the stock.
