Card payment on vending machines: systems, costs and retrofitting
29 September 2026Hot pizza around the clock, without a kitchen and without staff: pizza vending machines close the gap in supply at places where nothing is open in the evening and at weekends. Before you invest, it pays to take a close look at costs, location and operation.
How a pizza vending machine works
Ready-made pizzas are stored chilled in the vending machine. The customer chooses a variety on the touchscreen and, depending on the equipment, pays by cash, card or smartphone. An oven with infrared and convection heating bakes the pizza in around three minutes, after which it comes out of the dispensing compartment in a box.
How much does a pizza vending machine cost?
A pizza vending machine is one of the larger investments in vending. At VendSpot, the indoor model costs €20,000 net, and the outdoor version for outdoor locations around €25,000 net (as of September 2026). On top of that come running costs for goods, electricity, card payment, location and insurance. Leasing is available on request through our partner leasing companies, with a 50% down payment and monthly instalments for the rest.
Which location is suitable
A pizza vending machine thrives on hunger at times when there is no alternative. Good locations have three things in common: footfall in the evening, at night or at weekends, few restaurants within walking distance and a highly visible position.
- Companies with shift and night work, logistics centres and production halls
- Universities and halls of residence
- Railway stations, petrol stations and truck stops
- Leisure facilities, sports clubs, swimming pools and campsites
- Hotels without a night kitchen and residential areas with few restaurants
The outdoor version is intended for outdoor locations. Here, also clarify weather protection and lighting and, if the vending machine is to stand on public land, the permit from the municipality.
Power, space and transport
The oven needs a lot of power while baking. Plan a dedicated, adequately fused circuit and have the connection checked by a qualified electrician in advance. The exact connection values are in the data sheet. The vending machine weighs several hundred kilograms: check access, door widths and the floor before the delivery date is set.
Hygiene and food law
As the operator of a pizza vending machine, you are a food business operator and must register with the food inspection authority responsible for the location. Because the pizzas are stored chilled and freshly baked, the authorities expect a self-monitoring system based on HACCP principles: temperature checks, shelf-life checks, cleaning of the baking chamber and outlet, and proper documentation. The allergens of the varieties offered must be identifiable before purchase, most easily directly in the ordering menu.
You can read which other registrations are required in our guide Vending machine setting up.
Range and purchasing
The machine is stocked with ready-made pizzas in the format specified by the manufacturer for the oven. A manageable range of three to six varieties makes purchasing and stock-keeping easier. Classics such as Margherita and salami are almost always included, as is a vegetarian option.
Does a pizza vending machine pay off?
Profitability depends above all on the number of pizzas sold. A simplified sample calculation with assumed values: selling price €7.00 net, cost of goods €3.00, purchase price €20,000 net and running costs of €400 per month.
| Pizzas per day | Gross profit per month | Surplus after running costs | Calculated payback period |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | €1,200 | €800 | around 25 months |
| 20 | €2,400 | €2,000 | around 10 months |
| 30 | €3,600 | €3,200 | around 6 months |
The values are assumptions, not a forecast, and electricity and payment costs rise slightly with increasing sales. But the table shows why the choice of location determines success.
