Vending machine depreciation

2 October 2026Shrinkage describes losses due to theft, incorrect removal, damage or expired goods that do not show up in revenue.
Function and area of use
With vending machines that use a Dispensing mechanism , shrinkage is low, because goods are only dispensed after payment. It is different with open systems such as micro markets or smart fridges, where customers take the goods themselves. Here, sensors, cameras or weighing record what is taken and match it against payments.
Operators reduce shrinkage through regular stocktaking, shorter restocking intervals for fresh food and careful reconciliation of stock and revenue in the telemetry.
Advantages
- More accurate margin calculation
- Quick detection of irregularities
- Fewer write-offs
