Vending machine remote maintenance

18 January 2026A IoT vending machine (Internet of Things) is a fully networked device that collects data via sensors and exchanges it with other systems or the operator over the internet. This makes the vending machine part of an intelligent infrastructure.
Function and area of use
In the IoT scenario, the vending machine “talks” to the warehouse, the payment service provider and even other vending machines. Sensors record not only sales but also environmental data such as temperature, humidity or customer footfall in front of the unit. This data is analysed in the cloud to identify sales patterns (e.g.
IoT vending machines are ideal for modern retail concepts and smart cities. They enable personalised marketing: a customer could receive an offer via an app when near a vending machine. IoT devices can also be integrated seamlessly into supply chains, so that the restocking lorry only sets off once the route has been optimised using data.
In industry, IoT enables integration into ERP systems (such as SAP), so that goods consumption at the vending machine feeds directly into production planning.
Advantages
- Data-based location optimisation by analysing purchasing behaviour
- Seamless integration into existing IT landscapes and apps
- Dynamic pricing depending on time of day or stock level
- Automated replenishment logistics saves time and fuel
- Maximum transparency across all processes in the vending network
- Basis for innovative payment models (subscriptions, loyalty points)
- Real-time alerts for unauthorised opening or vibration (theft protection)
Technical details
The hardware consists of a powerful controller with integrated radio modules (NB-IoT, LTE-M) and numerous sensors. Data is often transmitted via lightweight protocols such as MQTT to save data volume and energy.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between telemetry and IoT?
Telemetry is pure data transmission (e.g. stock level). IoT goes further: the device can trigger actions independently based on the data or interact with other systems.
Does an IoT vending machine need a lot of data volume?
No, the data packets transmitted are very small. A standard M2M (machine-to-machine) mobile tariff is perfectly sufficient.
