18 January 2026The Dispensing mechanism is the physical system inside a vending machine that transports the goods from the storage position to the dispensing chute. It is the heart of product dispensing and must guarantee maximum reliability.
Function and area of use
Different mechanisms are used depending on the type of product. The classic spiral mechanism is ideal for snacks and bars, while lift systems collect delicate goods (e.g. glass bottles or fresh baked goods) gently and carry them to the customer. For heavy or irregularly shaped items, conveyor belts or pusher systems are often used.
The dispensing mechanism is put to work in almost every vending scenario. In industry (PPE vending machines), it must be particularly robust, while in retail (ice cream or pizza vending machines), speed and precision are the priority. Modern mechanisms are modular, so an operator can switch from a double spiral to a conveyor belt within a few minutes to adapt the range flexibly.
Thanks to intelligent motor control, modern mechanisms detect blockages immediately and try to free the product themselves with short reversing movements before an error message is triggered.
Advantages
- High flexibility thanks to interchangeable spirals and belts
- Gentle dispensing thanks to innovative lift systems
- Minimising failed sales through precise motor control
- Long service life thanks to low-maintenance components
- Quick conversion to new product sizes without tools
- Reliable operation even at high utilisation
- Sensor-monitored dispensing prevents “empty purchases”
Technical details
The mechanism is driven by stepper motors or DC motors controlled via the MDB bus. Sensors (light barriers) at the dispensing chute confirm that the product has dropped successfully. The materials are usually food-safe plastic and stainless steel.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if a product gets stuck?
Thanks to infrared sensors, the vending machine detects when nothing has dropped. The spiral turns a little further or the customer gets their money back immediately (guaranteed vend).
Can very small items also be dispensed?
Yes, special micro spirals or compartment dividers allow even the smallest items, such as packs of chewing gum, to be separated reliably.
