Age verification (youth protection)

Age verification is a technical module in the vending machine that ensures age-restricted products (e.g. tobacco, alcohol, e-cigarettes) are only sold to people who have reached the legal minimum age.

Function and area of use

In Germany, selling alcoholic drinks or tobacco products to minors is strictly prohibited. To offer these products in vending machines, a certified age verification system is mandatory. This usually involves document readers that scan the identity card or EU driving licence.

An alternative method is verification via the Girocard (e-cash age verification), which reads the date of birth stored in the chip of the bank card. Modern vending machines integrate these modules directly into the sales control system. Only once the system has confirmed the age is the payment process enabled. This allows vending machines to be operated in a legally compliant way in kiosks, petrol stations or public spaces.
