Cashless payment

18 January 2026NFC payment (near field communication) is a radio standard for contactless data transmission over short distances (a few centimetres). At vending machines, it allows payment without inserting a card or entering a PIN.
Function and area of use
NFC-enabled means of payment contain a small chip and an antenna. As soon as they are held in the electromagnetic field of the vending machine reader, a secure data exchange takes place. This works with physical cards as well as with digital wallets on smartwatches or smartphones.
The range of applications extends across all modern vending solutions. Because there are no mechanical parts (such as a card slot), NFC readers are extremely low-maintenance and resistant to dirt or tampering attempts (skimming). This makes them particularly attractive for outdoor vending machines at petrol stations or car parks.
In company environments, NFC is often used for closed loops: employees can hold their canteen card or key fob directly to the vending machine to buy a drink. Billing then takes place conveniently via the salary account or prepaid credit.
Advantages
- Fastest payment method on the market (transaction in under 1 second)
- No mechanical wear from card insertion
- Highest customer satisfaction thanks to intuitive operation
- Compatible with wearables (Apple Watch, fitness trackers)
- Lower risk of fraud thanks to encryption technology
- Maintenance-free and weatherproof for outdoor use
- Seamless integration into telemetry dashboards
Technical details
NFC readers operate at a frequency of 13.56 MHz. They support standards such as ISO/IEC 14443 and MIFARE. Integration into the vending machine is usually plug & play via standardised vending protocols. Data is transmitted to the server via secure VPN tunnels.
Frequently asked questions
Is NFC payment also possible for amounts over 50 euros?
Yes. For higher amounts, depending on the payment service provider’s settings, verification on the smartphone (Face ID/Touch ID) or entering a PIN on the terminal may be required.
Can loyalty cards also be used via NFC?
Yes, modern systems can be configured so that discount cards or bonus programmes are also recognised via the same reader.
